The Gustave L. and Janet W. Levy Library

Circulation Services

Borrowing Books, Journals and More: Mount Sinai faculty, students and staff, members of the Mount Sinai Alumni Association and House Staff participating in the Consortium for Graduate Medical Education (GME) may check out most books, journals, and audiovisual materials from the Levy Library.

Please go to the Service Desk, located on the 11th floor of the Library across from the main entrance, to borrow materials. (View the Library floorplan). Items may be checked out when Circulation Services are available.

Library Cards: Levy Library does not issue library cards. Instead, a bar coded strip is attached to the back of your Mount Sinai ID, and you present your ID when you charge out Library material. To register for circulation privileges and obtain your Library bar code, please bring your Mount Sinai ID to the Service Desk, where Library staff will create an account for you.

Circulation Periods:

  • Monographs (Books) or Audio Tapes: Two weeks
  • Bound Journals: One week
  • Unbound Journals: Two hours
  • Audiovisual Materials (except audio tapes): One day
  • Reserve Materials: Three hours. Reserve materials may also circulate overnight from one hour before the Circulation Service closes. They are due back within one hour after the Circulation Service opens, usually on the following day.
  • Reference Books, MSSM Dissertations or MSSM Theses: May be used in the Library, but may not be checked out.

Returning Borrowed Materials: Please return borrowed items to the Service Desk when Circulation Services are available.

When Circulation Services are unavailable, materials that are not on reserve may be deposited into a Levy Library book drop or book return box. A book drop is built into the right side of the Service Desk counter, and a Book Return box is located near the Annenberg escalator on the Lobby level.

Important: All reserve items must be returned to the to the Service Desk when Circulation Services are available so that Library staff can immediately check them in and make them available to other patrons. Reserve materials should not be deposited into a book drop or book return box. Note that overdue fines for reserve materials are 50 cents for each hour that Circulation Services are available.

Renewals: You may renew an item that you have checked out two times unless it has been placed on Hold by another patron.

  • To renew materials that are not on reserve, please visit the Service Desk or phone the Circulation Department at 212-241-7791 (ext. 47791). You can also renew non-reserve items online at any time: click on My Account from any Library Catalog page.
  • All reserve items must be renewed at the Service Desk when Circulation Services are available.

Holds: Most items that have been checked out may be placed on Hold. Once on Hold status, an item cannot be renewed. You will be notified when the material has been returned and you can then obtain it from the Service Desk. Please note that reserve items may not be placed on hold.

To place an item on Hold, please phone 212-241-7791 (ext. 47791) or visit the Service Desk. You can also place a Hold at any time through the online My Account service. To do so, locate the record in the Library Catalog, click on the Details button, and then click on Place Hold.

See our guide to placing online Renewals and Holds here.
